Hamilton police officers were recently challenged to a game of basketball.
Not thinking the officers would accept the challenge came as a surprise to the kids at the Prince of Wales School but quite often the Hamilton police officers work to spend time with people between the demands of the day on their breaks and of course off duty. Some days are obviously easier than others.
Of course as the Media officer I had to inquire as I often do to what motivated these cops to accept the challenge.
"The kids on the court loved being able to see us at a time when there wasn't an emergency" said Constable Alexis Petrovic
Constable Kevin McKnight one of the cities east end school liaison / youth officers said "I think it's important that police officers continue to get to know young people and spend time with them when there isn't something negative happening and the sirens are sounding"
"To keep things fair we kept all our gear on in the heat" said A/Sgt Greg Slack. Slack is always sharing a laugh with everyone he meets along the way working to make his assigned neighbourhoods safe. Slack was and still is an advocate of the Hamilton Police Service Crime Stoppers program and reminds young people constantly about using the program to say something about crime anonymously.
The other officers from the East End Hamilton Police Station there that day also told me that they expect to be busy this summer but intend to go above and beyond between the calls for service so that youth can see the police in a more positive light and that this was likely the first of many engagement initiatives.
